01/15/11 - TOW IN BRO BOND

Even though there's been surf virtually every day (I don't write about them all sometimes), it's been pretty inconsistent and frustrating at times. Today it came to a head. I'm in great shape and have been paddling forever, it seems like, for the entire month so far. So today I want to surf my ass off and catch like 50 waves, but only maybe three an hour are coming through on a weekend. A Saturday. So I'm paddling and chasing everything that even moves, boat wakes, seal wakes, water droplets, little wind ripples on the surface. And a couple of guys notice this. I try to catch two waves - unsuccessfully - and ended up - twice - chasing these waves kicking and yelling and screaming trying to catch them. Trying. And ended up 30 yards inside without actually catching a wave, and, embarassingly, having to paddle back out defeated. Many times. So then I do this a third time, and a good friend of mine is in the direction that I'm paddling. And he's laughing at yet another futile attempt of mine to catch yet another wave that can't be caught. So in good bro form, he holds out his right hand as I'm approaching him paddling like a lunatic - I grab it with my right hand, we form the Tow In Bro Bond strongly, instantly, perfectly - and he flings me along maybe an extra few feet in jest to give me extra pulpultionary (word?) power. Another useless 20 yards of of flailing and chasing, another defeat, uncaught wave. But I thought it was so funny that we did that. It's moments like that in the water that can't get much better. Funny as shit. - Cliff
